The transition from Animal Kingdom to Animal Late Capitalism really didn't help all that much. We stopped having to worry about where our next meal was coming from, and started to worry that our next meal would be difficult to eat in front of a date without looking like a warthog. Not that being a warthog is a bad thing. The point is, this is the kind of thing we have to worry about now. You can still roll in the mud and all, but everyone is looking at you now, and what they think about you absolutely does matter. The old angst of living under Mother Nature was unrelenting and harsh, but it was clear where it was coming from. You just had to survive until the next day, and a general lack of object permanence precluded anyone from wondering if a certain top made them look funny. Add in a little conversation and that harsh reality starts to feel downright quaint. Neurosis is louder than existential angst, but you have to go looking for it. That's what the comic is about.
